Åkerman was born in Stockholm, Sweden; her family moved to Toronto, Canada when she was two years old. Since then her family has moved back to Sweden, but Malin stayed in Canada. She lived in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario for a short while, attending Parliament Oak Primary School, and then Sir Winston Secondary School. She has also lived in Toronto where she attended North Toronto Collegiate Institute and Dante Alighieri Academy.
